Salt Lake County Code §5.17.140 gives any resident the right to post a 'No Solicitation' sign at the main entrance door or on the property line near the walkway, and requires every solicitor to check each residence for such a notice before knocking or ringing the bell. Ignoring a posted sign is itself a violation. Most cities in the county (Salt Lake City, Sandy, Murray, West Jordan, West Valley City) mirror this rule. Solicitation hours are also restricted — door-to-door sales are generally prohibited after sunset or 9:00 PM and before 9:00 AM. Aggressive tactics, refusal to leave when asked, or returning to a posted house are separately punishable.
Under §5.17.140, the 'No Solicitation' sign must be readable from the entrance and may be a sticker, decal, or placard. The display constitutes legal notice to any solicitor that the occupant does not want solicitation, and the solicitor has an affirmative duty to look for the sign before ringing the bell or knocking. The county chapter also prohibits solicitation during nighttime hours — most cities set the window at 9:00 AM to sunset or 9:00 PM, whichever is earlier. Solicitors who continue a pitch after being asked to leave commit criminal trespass under Utah Code §76-6-206. Charitable canvassers registered with the Utah Division of Consumer Protection are not exempt from no-knock signs — the constitutional right to canvass yields to the homeowner's right to refuse contact (Watchtower Bible v. Stratton, 536 U.S. 150). Solicitors operating after dark, using high-pressure tactics, or refusing to provide a written contract within 3 days lose their badge and may be banned from re-applying for 1-3 years. The Utah Home Solicitation Sales Act (Utah Code §70C-7 / §13-11) gives buyers a 3-day right of rescission on any door-to-door sale over $25.
Ignoring a 'No Solicitation' sign is an infraction (typically $100-$300) on first offense and a Class C misdemeanor on repeat ($750 max). Solicitation outside permitted hours, refusing to leave after being asked, or returning to a posted house is criminal trespass — Class B misdemeanor, up to $1,000 fine and 6 months jail. Aggressive solicitation (blocking the door, following a resident, threatening) escalates to Class A misdemeanor. Badge revocation is automatic on a second violation within 12 months.
