Door-to-door sellers in Forsyth County must register with the Sheriff's Office and carry a permit before canvassing. Under Ordinance No. 99, solicitors submit to a background investigation, and the permit is valid for 90 days.
Forsyth County regulates commercial door-to-door sales through Chapter 22, Article IV of the Code of Ordinances (Ordinance No. 99). A solicitor or canvasser must file an application with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Support Division, pay an investigation fee, and clear a background check before soliciting. The permit is valid for 90 days and renewable. At each door, the permit holder must announce their name, state that Forsyth County issued them a solicitor permit, give the purpose of the visit, and present an identification card. Religious, political, and charitable canvassing is treated as protected speech and is not licensed the same way.
Soliciting without the required Sheriff's Office permit, or misrepresenting a solicitation, can bring a citation under Chapter 22, denial or revocation of the permit, and removal from the neighborhood.
