Trenton, NJ Soliciting & Door-to-Door: Solicitor Permits (2026)

Trenton Code § 206-2 makes it unlawful to peddle in the City without a license, or to solicit or canvass door-to-door without a permit, both issued only to individual persons; an employer sending multiple workers must get a separate license for each one. Section 206-3 requires a sworn written application to the City Clerk covering the applicant's identity, home address, the goods or services offered, the source of supply, and whether the applicant has any criminal or municipal-ordinance convictions, plus a $2 investigation fee. Section 206-4 sends every application to the Police Director for a character and business-responsibility investigation, and lets the Director deny an application whose goods, services, or applicant are not free from fraud, subject to a right to submit mitigating factors and seek reconsideration.

Section 206-5 sets the license fee at $50. Section 206-6 exempts public-utility employees, political-party volunteers, routine delivery drivers, court-ordered sales, honorably discharged veterans, exempt volunteer firefighters, self-grown produce sellers, and nonprofit vendors from some or all of the licensing and fee requirements. m. m. Section 206-11 bars soliciting on any sidewalk fronting a public building. Violations fall under § 206-13's reference to the Chapter 1 general penalty: up to $2,000, 90 days in jail, or 90 days of community service.
