The Columbus Recreation and Parks Department administers block party permits. A Block Party Permit is required when an applicant desires to close any zoned residential public street or alley for a neighborhood gathering or recreational activity. Applicants must live on the block requested to be closed. Applications may be submitted up to one year in advance and should be submitted at least 30 days before the block party. Applications submitted less than 30 days before the event are not guaranteed approval and incur late fees. Barricades are a required component of all street closures and the permit holder/coordinator is responsible for obtaining them. The city provides guidance on barricade sources. For events with 75 or fewer people, there is no special event permit fee for the block party itself. Events expecting larger attendance or involving vendors, alcohol, or amplified sound may require additional permits. Food at block parties follows specific rules: small gatherings without outside vendors do not need food permits, but events sponsored by organizations or including outside vendors must register with Marion County Public Health Department. Amplified sound must comply with Columbus noise regulations.
Holding a street event without a permit may result in citations. Failure to use proper barricades creates liability for the organizer. Noise complaints may result in police response and shutdown.
