Full Breakdown

Section 4-27(d) of the outdoor event permitting article targets road races and other road-closure events on County Highway 30A and its connectors, including County Highways 393, 83, 283 and 395. To limit traffic congestion, the county caps these events at no more than five road closures per year. Qualifying events must benefit a Walton County charity organized as a 501(c)(2) or 501(c)(3) and be hosted by a nonprofit organization; priority goes to events with a long-standing history, an established safety record and strong attendance. No part of the county's multi-use path may be used to stage the event, single-lane closures are not permitted, and the applicant must satisfy Walton County Emergency Management, the South Walton Fire District and the Sheriff's Office on public safety.

A completed application, including the county's Roadway Activities Application - Road Closure Request, must reach Public Works and then go to the Board of County Commissioners for approval at a regular meeting, and must be submitted at least 90 days before the scheduled event. Applicants must document the event's history, past safety record and past participation levels so the outdoor review committee can prioritize established events over new ones.

Violations & Fines

An event that exceeds the five-closure annual cap, uses the multi-use path, requires a single-lane closure, or is not hosted by a qualifying nonprofit does not meet Section 4-27(d)'s criteria and can be denied or have its permit revoked under Section 4-27(g), with unpermitted road closures separately punishable under the county's general penalty in Section 1-6.

Frequently Asked Questions
