Gainesville, FL Special Events & Permits: Park Event Permits (2026)

Anyone who wants to hold an organized event, reserve a shelter, or use tents or other special setups in a Gainesville park needs authorization from the city manager or a designee. Section 18-17 gives the city manager the authority to "promulgate rules and regulations for the purpose of regulating the use of public buildings, parks and playgrounds" and to "establish fees for parks, recreation and cultural affairs facilities, and events" when those fees are not already listed in Appendix A. " The same section exempts nature parks, centers, and conservation areas listed under § 18-18(b) from the temporary shade-structure allowance altogether.

Once an event or facility reservation is authorized, § 18-23 requires payment according to Appendix A, the Schedule of Fees, Rates and Charges, for admission, facility use, and recreational event participation. Fees in Appendix A that carry a surcharge apply that surcharge as a mandatory addition that "may not be waived," except where Appendix A specifically exempts it. The city manager retains discretion to discount fees for early registration in youth programs, but has no general authority to waive the surcharge.
