Missouri Residential Pool Barrier Code Statewide Minimum

Missouri jurisdictions that have adopted the International Residential Code apply Appendix G / Chapter 42 swimming pool barrier requirements. Outdoor private pools, hot tubs, and spas must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches tall measured from finished ground level on the exterior side. The maximum vertical clearance from the ground to the bottom of the barrier is 2 inches. Openings cannot exceed 1-3/4 inches, and pedestrian gates must open outward away from the pool with self-closing, self-latching hardware mounted at least 54 inches above the ground. These standards are baseline minimums; cities may impose stricter rules but generally cannot drop below the IRC.

Failure to comply blocks final inspection and certificate of occupancy; municipalities issue stop-work orders, daily fines, and may order pool drainage until compliant.
