North Carolina Solar Panel Permitting Under State Code

Solar photovoltaic installations require permits under the N.C. State Building Code, adopted pursuant to N.C.G.S. Chapter 143 Article 9. Electrical work must comply with the National Electrical Code as adopted by North Carolina and be performed by a licensed electrical contractor under N.C.G.S. Chapter 87 Article 4. Local inspections departments review and approve installations but apply uniform state code requirements. Interconnection with utilities is governed by N.C. Utilities Commission rules under N.C.G.S. Chapter 62.
