Above-ground pools in Schaumburg are subject to permit and safety requirements depending on size and permanence. Permanent above-ground pools require a building permit and must comply with barrier, setback, and electrical requirements. Small temporary or inflatable pools under a certain size threshold may be exempt from permitting but still must meet barrier requirements if they hold water deep enough for submersion.
Schaumburg regulates above-ground pools based on their size, depth, and permanence. Permanent above-ground pools with rigid or semi-rigid walls require a building permit and must meet the same setback and barrier requirements as in-ground pools. The pool must be set back from property lines per the zoning district requirements, typically at least 5 feet. If the pool walls are at least 48 inches above grade, the walls themselves may serve as the barrier provided the access ladder or steps are removable or have a lockable gate when not in use. A platform or deck attached to the pool that provides access must have a gate with self-closing and self-latching hardware. Electrical connections for pumps, filters, and any lighting require an electrical permit and GFCI protection. Small inflatable or temporary wading pools with a water depth under 24 inches are generally exempt from permit requirements but should still be supervised when in use. All above-ground pools must be maintained to prevent standing stagnant water that could become a mosquito breeding habitat. Drainage from above-ground pools must not be directed onto neighboring properties. Pool water should be dechlorinated before discharge to the stormwater system.
Installing a permanent above-ground pool without a permit is a building code violation. Non-compliant barrier access (unlocked ladder on an above-ground pool) is a safety violation subject to enforcement. Stagnant water in unmaintained pools may trigger public health enforcement.
