Pool barriers in Converse follow ISPSC Section 305. The barrier must be at least 48 inches tall measured from the ground on the side facing away from the pool. Vertical picket spacing must not exceed 4 inches, and horizontal members below 45 inches must be spaced so that a sphere larger than 1.75 inches cannot pass between them (this prevents a child from climbing). Chain-link fencing used as a barrier must have mesh openings no larger than 1.75 inches unless slats are installed to reduce openings. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, and have the latch located at least 54 inches above the ground on the pool side. Where a wall of the dwelling forms part of the barrier, every door leading directly to the pool area must be equipped with an alarm that sounds when the door is opened, or the pool must have a safety cover complying with ASTM F1346, or the doors must have a self-closing self-latching feature with the latch at least 54 inches above the floor. Windows with sills less than 48 inches above the floor that open into the pool area must have screens or alarms. Above-ground pools with walls at least 48 inches tall may use the pool wall as the barrier if the ladder is removable and locked when the pool is not in use.
