Under Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act, a pool barrier must be at least 4 feet high on the outside, have no gaps a child could pass through, and gates must be self-closing and self-latching.
Florida Statute 515.29 sets the barrier specifications that apply countywide, including unincorporated Escambia County and Pensacola. The barrier must be at least 4 feet high measured from the outside, with no gaps, openings, indentations, or protrusions that let a young child crawl under, squeeze through, or climb over. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing, and have a self-latching locking device whose release is on the pool side and placed so a child cannot reach it. A dwelling wall used as part of the barrier triggers additional door and window protections under FS 515.27.
A barrier that does not meet FS 515.29 fails inspection; a new pool without any qualifying safety feature is a second-degree misdemeanor under FS 515.27(2).
