Lexington enforces pool barriers at least 48 inches tall under the Kentucky Residential Code. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching with 4-inch ground clearance maximum.
Under the 2018 Kentucky Residential Code (815 KAR 7:120, Section R326), all outdoor residential swimming pools in Lexington must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches tall measured from the exterior side. The maximum vertical clearance between the ground and the bottom of the barrier is 4 inches. No opening in the barrier may allow passage of a 4-inch diameter sphere. Horizontal members on the barrier have specific spacing requirements to prevent children from climbing. All gates in the barrier must be self-closing and self-latching, with latch placement meeting code specifications so young children cannot reach them. If a dwelling wall serves as part of the pool barrier, either a code-compliant safety cover or approved door alarms are required on all openings to the pool area. Electric fences designed to repel persons are prohibited in residential zones under the Lexington-Fayette Zoning Ordinance. The barrier must be in place and pass inspection before the pool is filled or used.
