Per CA Swimming Pool Safety Act (H&S Code 115920-115929), pools require 60-inch barriers with self-closing/self-latching gates. At least one additional safety feature required: pool cover, alarm, or self-closing doors.
Under PMC Chapter 74, Article V and California Health and Safety Code Sections 115920-115929, property fencing around pools must be permanent and at least 5 feet (60 inches) high above grade. All gates must be self-closing and self-latching with latches at least 5 feet above ground. Driveway and garage vehicle-access doors cannot serve as pool enclosure barriers. Pool deck fencing must be at least 5 feet from the pool deck outside the fencing area. Doors providing pool access must have exit alarms or self-closing/latching devices with release mechanisms at least 54 inches above the floor. Homeowners must choose from four safety barrier options (A through D) to meet both city and state requirements.
Non-compliant pool fencing is a serious safety hazard. The Building Division requires immediate correction. Failure to maintain barriers may result in citations.
