Under the SMMC Building Code, every swimming pool, pond, or body of water 18 inches or more deep must be surrounded by a fence, wall, or structure at least 4.5 feet tall with no openings larger than 4 inches. Gates must have latches at least 4.5 feet above ground and be self-closing and secured when adults are not present. Under SMMC Β§9.21.050, pools within 30 feet of a property line must have a masonry wall or solid fence at least 6 feet on the facing side. When an existing enclosure is replaced or repaired over 50% of its length, it must meet all new enclosure requirements.
