Renton pool barriers follow IRC Appendix G via RMC 4-5-060: 48-inch minimum, no openings over 4 inches, self-closing/self-latching outward gates. Pool rules override RMC 4-4-040 fence limits.
The Washington State Building Code, enforced by Renton through RMC 4-5-060, requires all residential pools to be enclosed by a barrier meeting IRC Appendix G. Minimum height is 48 inches measured on the outside, with no openings greater than 4 inches and no horizontal members that could serve as a climb aid within the lower 45 inches. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, open outward, and have the latch at least 54 inches above grade. Where the house wall forms part of the barrier, doors opening to the pool area must have alarms per IRC R329. Above-ground pools may use the structure wall as the barrier if the ladder is removable or enclosed. These pool-specific rules override RMC 4-4-040 general fence height and setback rules per RMC 4-4-040(D). Inspections verify compliance before final pool permit sign-off. Renton also requires compliance with the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (15 USC 8003) for suction drains.
Pool without compliant barrier: stop-use order, civil penalty under RMC 1-10, potential liability for drowning injuries.
