NC Residential Code Appendix V section on spas and hot tubs allows an approved safety cover listed to ASTM F1346 as an alternative to a 48-inch barrier. The cover must be lockable and strong enough to support the weight of a child. Electrical bonding and GFCI protection are required the same as for pools. Permits are required for any hot tub with water depth over 24 inches and for the associated electrical work. A licensed electrician must install the dedicated 240-volt circuit common on most hot tubs. Setbacks typically match pool standards. Portable plug-in spas under 24 inches deep may be exempt from barrier rules but still need electrical compliance.
