Winston-Salem pools must comply with federal VGB Act anti-entrapment drain cover requirements, NC electrical code for equipotential bonding, and barrier rules. Public pools are separately regulated by NC DHHS under NCGS 130A-280.
All pools built or remodeled must use drain covers certified to the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act standard ASME A112.19.8. Single-drain pools require an additional safety system such as a safety vacuum release. Electrical bonding of all metal pool components is required by the NC Electrical Code to prevent shock. GFCI protection is required on all pool circuits. Signage listing emergency numbers and capacity is required for any pool used by more than a single family. Pool chemicals must be stored in a cool, ventilated area away from children. Semi-public pools at STRs, HOAs, and apartment complexes are inspected annually by Forsyth County Environmental Health under state delegation.
Non-compliant drain covers or bonding discovered at inspection triggers immediate closure until repaired.
