Ridgewood, NJ Swimming Pools & Spas: Pool Permits (2026)

Under the Uniform Construction Code as administered locally, Village of Ridgewood Code § 125-3(A) requires that the fee for a construction permit and related permits be paid before the Construction Official's office issues the permit. Chapter 145's fee enumeration, § 145-6, sets the actual dollar figures collected under that authority: an above-ground pool permit costs $110, an in-ground pool permit costs $325, and a permit for swimming pool barriers or fences taller than six feet costs an additional $125. Because a residential pool touches more than one subcode, homeowners also pay separately for electrical work on pool, spa, or hot tub wiring and bonding, and for the plumbing subcode permit covering the pool's water supply and drain connections, both billed on their own line items in the same § 145-6 schedule.

The Building Subcode Official and other subcode officials named in § 125-1(A) review and inspect the work; plan review, when required, is credited toward the final construction permit fee under § 125-3(B). If the Construction Official denies or conditions a permit, the applicant can appeal to the Construction Board of Appeals established under § 125-2(A), a five-member board that includes a licensed architect or engineer and members qualified as plumbing and electrical subcode officials. Applicants should expect the pool permit, the barrier/fence permit if the fence exceeds six feet, and the related electrical and plumbing subcode permits to be filed and paid together before any digging or installation begins, since the Department will not issue the construction permit until its associated fee is paid in full.
