Woodbridge, NJ Swimming Pools & Spas: Pool Permits (2026)

Woodbridge Code § 35-8.2 states plainly that no person shall establish, construct or maintain a private swimming pool without first having obtained a permit. Section 35-8.1 defines a private swimming pool as an artificially constructed pool maintained by an individual for personal, family or guest use with a water depth of more than 18 inches; anything 18 inches or less counts as a private wading pool instead, a distinction that matters because pools over that depth trigger the full permit and design requirements.

The application goes to the Construction Official on the Township's forms and, per § 35-8.3, must specify the pool's dimensions, water volume, filter turnover rate, water inlet system, disinfection method, drainage and backwash method, and the maximum number of bathers allowed at one time. Under § 35-8.4, the Construction Official forwards the completed application to the Division of Health in the Department of Health and Welfare, which has 30 days to approve it, approve it with added safeguards, or reject it.

Design rules follow the permit: § 35-8.7 requires at least a six-inch air gap between the water supply and the pool's spill rim, § 35-8.8 requires a discharge system using no more than two-inch galvanized iron pipe (or an approved equal) draining to a brook or storm sewer, and expressly bars connecting any pool drain to the sanitary sewer. Section 35-8.9 conditions the permit on keeping the pool sanitary and properly chlorinated, and failure to restore water quality within the time the Division of Health sets is grounds for revoking the permit outright.
