Edison Township regulates private swimming pools under Chapter 17 (Housing) §17.08.170. No pool may be constructed, installed, altered, or maintained unless the owner first obtains (1) a Township pool license from the Division of Licenses approved by the Health Officer, and (2) a New Jersey Uniform Construction Code permit set from the Edison Construction Code Official - typically building, electrical, plumbing, and (if a gas heater is installed) fire-protection subcode permits filed under N.J.A.C. 5:23. Yard placement rules are zone-specific: in R-AA and R-A zones, the pool must be at least 20 feet from the rear lot line and must comply with the side-yard setback required of the principal structure; in R-BB and R-B zones, the pool must be at least 6 feet from any side or rear lot line. No pool is permitted in any required front yard. Edison expressly prohibits commercial swimming pools in the Township. Pool electrical work must comply with the National Electrical Code as adopted by NJ (Article 680, pool bonding/grounding) and must be performed by a NJ-licensed electrical contractor.
