012 sets the residential container standard: containers of not more than 35 gallons capacity unless the storage containers are supplied and approved by a permitted residential solid waste collector, leakproof, waterproof, fitted with a fly-tight lid and kept covered except while depositing or removing waste, with a 75-pound weight limit for container and contents combined. Acceptable materials are galvanized metal, rubber, fiberglass or plastic that does not become brittle in cold weather, and containers must be built so dogs, cats, rodents or other animals cannot get into the waste.
