East Baton Rouge Parish, LA Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Sec. 6:406 of the Baton Rouge City-Parish Code governs container placement for garbage districts in the unincorporated parish (the identical rule for the city runs at Sec. 6:381). Cans and containers must hold between five and thirty gallons, be built of substantial metal or plastic with a tight-fitting lid, have handles strong enough for a worker to empty by hand, and weigh no more than seventy-five pounds when full. Commercial establishments, institutions and schools that need more than two thirty-gallon containers, and apartment buildings with eight or more units, instead must use one-yard wheeled containers with self-closing lids designed for mechanical dumping.

Placement matters as much as the container itself: cans must sit on the neutral ground or on the premises immediately next to the street or sidewalk, and at least five feet from the traveled roadway if there's no curb or sidewalk. Setting a can on the street, sidewalk or in a roadside ditch is prohibited outright. the day after it, so residents can't leave containers curbside all week. Sec. 00 for a third or later violation in that same two-year window, enforced through the Title 1, Section 1:609 hearing process rather than criminal court.
