Bulk waste collection in Apex is administered through Town Public Works (not by GFL). Schedule a pickup through an online service request at apexnc.org/279 or by calling Ask Apex at (919) 249-3311; you will receive an email within 1-2 business days with your scheduled collection day. All items must be placed at the CURB by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day β staff will not access private property. Fees: single items (sofas, chairs, bicycles, grills, tables) $11 each; multiple items $60 per load (one truck capacity); white goods (refrigerators, washers, dryers) $18 each; mattresses/box springs $15 each with a $30 minimum (mattresses and box springs are counted as TWO separate items). MATTRESS RULE: mattresses and box springs are ONLY collected on Fridays. Fees are added to your next Town of Apex utility bill. Fragile items should be boxed or wrapped. New residents receive one free moving-box pickup if boxes are empty and flattened. The service is not available for businesses or apartments β they must arrange commercial roll-off service. EXCLUDED from bulk collection: construction and demolition debris (use a commercial roll-off dumpster); household hazardous waste including motor oil, paint, pool chemicals, antifreeze, batteries, drain openers, household cleaners, lighter fluid, kerosene, mercury thermometers, pesticides, photographic chemicals, solvents, and wood preservatives (take to the South Wake Solid Waste Management Facility at 6130 Old Smithfield Road, Apex, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday); electronics including TVs, computers, and microwaves (handled through periodic events or private e-waste recyclers); household recycling; and yard waste (regular weekly collection). Refrigerators, freezers, and other refrigerant-containing appliances require certified refrigerant recovery under EPA 40 CFR Part 82 before disposal β coordinate with the bulk crew. Latex paint may be dried with kitty litter or sawdust and disposed in regular trash if small quantity; large amounts and ALL oil-based paint go to South Wake HHW.
Setting out excluded items (construction debris, hazardous waste, electronics, tires) for bulk collection is a violation and the items will be left at the curb β the resident must remove or properly dispose. Improper disposal of refrigerant-containing appliances without certified recovery violates the federal Clean Air Act regulations at 40 CFR Part 82 with EPA civil penalties up to $46,989 per day per violation (2024 adjustment). Illegal dumping is a Class 3 misdemeanor for the first offense under NCGS 14-399 (less than 500 lb) and escalates to Class 1 misdemeanor for 500 lb or more or repeat offenses; commercial dumping is a Class I felony with civil penalties up to $5,000 per offense under NCGS 14-399.4.
