Charlottesville, VA Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Under Charlottesville City Code § 26-76, city-wide large item collection is available only to curbside customers who schedule a pickup by telephone, online form, in person, or in writing with the public works department's public service division, and pay a non-refundable fee to the treasurer's office before service. The fee schedule runs on a rolling year measured backward 365 days from the collection date: $35 for the first collection, $50 for the second, and $100 for the third and every collection after that, though customers may request an unlimited number of pickups.

Section 26-77 sets the placement window: accumulated large items must be set near the curb no earlier than 7:00 a.m. the day before the scheduled pickup and no later than 7:00 a.m. on collection day itself. Excluded items include anything that fits in a 32-gallon trash container, hazardous waste, recyclable boxes or cardboard, automotive parts, and bags or cans of ordinary domestic trash; contractor spoils such as brick, concrete, and roofing shingles from paid construction work are barred outright. Brush must measure between three and ten feet in length and no more than six inches in diameter to qualify.

If items are rejected for noncompliance, the resident must remove them within 24 hours of the scheduled collection day, per § 26-78. The city may instead collect nonconforming material and bill the property owner up to $150 per dump-truck load under § 26-79, with unpaid charges becoming a lien on the property. Both landlords and tenants share responsibility for compliance under § 26-80.
