Norwalk, CT Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Chapter 94 defines bulky solid waste as household items such as couches, chairs, bookcases, mattresses, carpets no more than four feet wide, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and large plastic items like children's toys, plus anything else the Chief of Operations and Public Works (the Director) designates (Section 94-2). The Common Council has designated the Norwalk Transfer Station as the disposal site for acceptable, bulky and recyclable solid waste under Connecticut General Statutes Section 22a-220a (Section 94-4). Residents and property owners current on their Norwalk vehicle tax get a disposal pass entitling them to dump up to one combined ton per year of acceptable, recyclable and bulky waste at no charge, displayed on the dashboard during each visit (Section 94-18); falling more than 45 days delinquent on vehicle tax voids the pass until the tax and penalties are paid.

Owners who pay vehicle tax to a different town can buy a pass under the Department's fee schedule (Section 94-19), and anyone bringing a pickup, van or trailer needs an additional disposal permit on top of the base pass (Section 94-20). Commercial premises may not store solid waste, including bulky items, on-site for more than seven days and must use the Transfer Station or a licensed hauler (Section 94-5D). Bulky solid waste specifically excludes special handling waste, such as hazardous materials, construction debris, or large machinery over six feet in any dimension, which requires separate arrangements (Section 94-2).
