Warwick, RI Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Sec. 22-81 lets the city's building inspection division, property maintenance division or the director of public works inspect properties for compliance and cite owners, operators or tenants by personal service or mail. For heavy trash specifically, subsection (b) caps special collections at two per address within any rolling 12-month period that starts on the date of the first pickup, except at owner-occupied single-family homes, which face no such limit. The material picked up is capped in size to what fits a one-ton liftgate truck, about 240 cubic feet, and the property owner must pay all labor, equipment and disposal costs for anything collected beyond the two-pickup or 240-cubic-foot limits.

Each day a violation continues is its own offense under subsection (c). Sec. 22-82 sets the base fine at up to $600 per offense, though the building inspection or property maintenance division can suspend that penalty if the violation is corrected within five days of the notice, unless the owner is a chronic violator. Sec. 22-83 defines a chronic violator as anyone cited under this article three or more times in 12 months, counting every violation type together rather than repeats of the same one, and sets that person's fine between $50 and $600 per offense, again with each day counted separately.

If the owner doesn't fix the violation within 15 days of citation, Sec. 22-84 lets the building inspector correct it and place the cost as a lien on the property with the same force as a real estate tax lien, and Sec. 22-88 gives the owner 15 days to appeal the violation finding, or 30 days to appeal an assessed cost, to municipal court.
