Hackensack, NJ Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Under § 93-7D(4), the City Council fixed a permanent weekly schedule for heavy trash and garden refuse collection built around Central Avenue as the dividing line: streets south of Central Avenue to the southern city boundary get pickup on the first and third Wednesday of the month, while streets from Central Avenue to the northern boundary get the second and fourth Wednesday. If a month has a fifth Wednesday, there's no rubbish pickup that week, and there is no pickup on Christmas Day under § 93-7D(4)(c) and (d).

The same subsection caps what any one address can put out for a given weekly collection day at two large furniture items or two cubic yards of miscellaneous rubbish, debris or garden refuse. Regular garbage and recycling collection runs on a separate, more frequent cycle: § 93-7D(1) requires collection no less than once per week on days set by the City Manager, while recyclables go out only on the date the Division of Sanitation designates for special collection under § 93-7B(3). The City Manager can suspend rubbish pickup for public health, safety or welfare emergencies under § 93-7D(4)(e).
