Rapid City, SD Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Rapid City writes its numeric dumpster placement standard into the development standards for the Urban Commercial (UC) zoning district rather than into the citywide trash chapter. 060(E), titled Screening, does three things: it forbids locating dumpsters in the front yard area of a UC lot, it requires any dumpster to sit at least 10 feet off the side yard line, and it requires that dumpster to be screened by a minimum 6-foot-high opaque fence or wall, specifically ruling out chain-link. The same subsection lets the Director waive any of those requirements case by case where the applicant demonstrates hardship.
