Bloomington, IL Trash & Recycling: Holiday Pickup Schedule (2026)

Section 21-306 of the Bloomington City Code sets the City's only holiday exception to its weekly refuse schedule: the City still collects garbage on every holiday that falls within a normal collection week, whether that is Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving or another route-day holiday, so residents do not lose a pickup for most holidays. Christmas Day is the single carve-out. Refuse is not collected on Christmas Day itself, or on whatever day the City designates for observing Christmas if the holiday is marked on a different date; instead, that stop is pushed to the next day the route is regularly scheduled to run, and every following stop that week shifts by the same one day.

Section 21-603 applies the identical structure to the separate every-other-week recycling program: recycling runs on every holiday except Christmas Day, and a Christmas-week recycling stop likewise moves to the next regularly scheduled recycling day rather than being skipped outright. Residents do not need to track a published holiday calendar for any holiday but Christmas; the schedule simply runs as normal, and only the Christmas week requires checking whether a route has slipped by a day.
