Bloomington, IL Trash & Recycling: Holiday Pickup Schedule (2026)

Section 21-306(A) sets the default: the City collects refuse on all holidays that fall within the weekly calendar for collection. Christmas Day, or the day the City designates for observance of Christmas, is the single carve-out. Subsection (B) says refuse is not collected on that day and is collected on the following day on which refuse is regularly scheduled to be collected. Section 21-603 repeats the rule for recycling.

The code prints no make-up date. The regular schedule belongs to the Director of Public Works: § 21-305(A) has garbage collected once per week "according to a collection schedule established by the Director of Public Works, except for such holidays as hereinafter provided." The city's 2026 Garbage & Recycling Calendar, updated 12/15/2025, says "Garbage and recycling will not be collected on Christmas Day, which is shown with a black box in the calendar." The Regular Pickup page matches: garbage is picked up every week and recycling every other week, each "except for Christmas Day."

Christmas Day 2026 is Friday, December 25. The calendar's zone legend runs from Zone 1 Monday through Zone 5 Friday. The text of the calendar and of the Regular Pickup page prints no make-up date and names no different observance day. The calendar's grid is color-coded, and its instructions say to "Use the color and collection day for your zone to find the matching color and collection day on the calendar." The December grid is therefore where a resident confirms the day for their own zone.

Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, 2026, and New Year's Day, Friday, January 1, 2027, are holidays inside the weekly collection calendar, so § 21-306(A) keeps normal service on both. The text of neither city document names either holiday. Both posted calendars are for 2026 only, and the worked example "Garbage and recycling for Zone 4 Blue will be picked up on January 1," is a 2026 instruction that says nothing about January 1, 2027.

The Regular Pickup page lists leaves, trimmings, brush and bulk each as curbside pickup every other week, alternating with recycling, "not including municipal holidays," and prints no list of municipal holiday dates.

The City serves single family residential buildings and multifamily buildings with six or fewer units (§ 21-301(A)), and commercial waste is not acceptable for curbside pickup. The calendar adds that "Pickup schedules are subject to change, especially during fall leaf collection and inclement weather."
