Melbourne, FL Trash & Recycling: Holiday Pickup Schedule (2026)

The City of Melbourne does not legislate a dated holiday calendar. The solid waste franchise with Waste Management Inc. of Florida, printed in Part IV, Article III of the City Code, hands the day-to-day schedule to the hauler and the City's Contract Manager, and the Public Works & Utilities trash page carries the standing holiday rule. That page lists five holidays WM observes: Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It prints no year and no list of shifted days, so this page gives dates only where the calendar fixes them: Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, and Christmas falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. New Year's Day, Friday, January 1, 2027, is not on the City's list.

The franchise backs the rule up in Section 6.5, Hours and Holidays. Residential Collection Service takes place between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. If a residential normal collection day falls on a Holiday, the hauler provides collection on the next scheduled collection day, unless an earlier make-up date is agreed between the City and the hauler. Residential Collection Service means solid waste plus recycling. Solid waste in roll carts is collected twice per week under Section 6.3.2.1, while program recyclables (Section 6.4.2) and yard trash (Section 6.3.3.3) are collected once per week, all under the Collection Schedule. Section 6.8.1 adds a holiday-week protection: the hauler acknowledges that higher waste volume during Holiday weeks can leave occasional bags outside the cart and agrees to collect all bags left outside the designated container during Holiday weeks.

Commercial customers get a separate rule. Under Section 7.3.5.2 the hauler is not required to provide Commercial Solid Waste Collection Service on Holidays, and a commercial day that lands on a Holiday is collected on the next scheduled collection day unless an earlier make-up date is agreed with the customer. Residential units that the City designates for commercial-style collection under Section 6.7 fall under the commercial track for their dumpster service.

If a pickup is missed, Section 12.11.2 sets the clock: notify the hauler before noon Monday through Friday and it returns before 7:00 p.m. the same day, or after noon and collection is made by noon the next business day. A missed collection not remedied that way counts as a complaint, and the City decides how an unresolved dispute is settled under Section 12.11.5. Curbside means within four feet of the edge of the paved street or service alley under Section 6.6.
