South Bend runs its own municipal trash collection through the Public Works Division of Solid Waste. Curbside trash, yard waste, and bulky items are picked up the same day, Monday through Thursday. Look up your day at southbendin.gov or by calling 311.
Under Municipal Code Sec. 16-6, the City holds exclusive jurisdiction over residential refuse collection, so no private hauler picks up your household trash. The Division of Solid Waste collects Monday through Thursday; trash, seasonal yard waste, and bulky-item pickup all fall on your assigned day. When a City holiday lands Monday through Thursday, collection slides one day later for the rest of that week. There is no fixed citywide day. Find your route through the City's online collection-day lookup or the 311 center, and expect service delays after major holidays. Monthly service is billed on your City Utilities statement at $15.78 for a one-family home.
Setting out refuse for anyone other than the City or its permitted hauler violates Sec. 16-6. Missed pickups and route questions go to 311 or the Division of Solid Waste at 574-235-9971.
