Recycling in South Bend is handled by Borden Waste-Away Services through the St. Joseph County Solid Waste Management District, not the City. Recycling runs on a different day than city trash, so check the County's calendar for your route.
Unlike trash, recycling is not a City of South Bend service. Curbside recycling is provided by Borden Waste-Away Services under contract with the St. Joseph County Solid Waste Management District, and Indiana preempts local governments from banning or taxing containers like plastic bags and bottles under IC 36-1-3-8.6. Recycling collection does not fall on the same day as your city trash pickup; the day is set by Borden and the County. Municipal Code Sec. 16-6(b) lets residents separate and recycle their own materials, but the City does not mandate participation. Accepted single-stream materials include paper, cardboard, cans, and rigid plastics; look up your recycling day through the County or Borden.
There is no city fine for skipping recycling; participation is voluntary. Contaminated or misused city trash toters, however, draw a $10 contamination fee under the Sec. 16-6 rate schedule.
