Thousand Oaks provides curbside trash, recycling, and green waste collection through a contracted waste hauler. Collection occurs weekly on assigned days. Under SB 1383, organic waste including food scraps must be separated from trash beginning 2022.
The City of Thousand Oaks contracts with a waste hauler for residential curbside collection of trash, recycling, and green waste on a weekly schedule. Each residence receives three bins: black/gray for trash, blue for recyclables, and green for yard waste and food scraps. Collection day is based on neighborhood zone and is assigned when service begins. Bins should be placed at the curb by 6 AM on collection day and retrieved by the end of the day. Under California SB 1383, food scraps and organic waste must be placed in the green waste bin rather than the trash. Contaminated recycling bins (with food waste, plastic bags, or non-recyclable items) may not be collected. Holiday collection schedules may shift by one day. The city also offers special programs for electronic waste, household hazardous waste, and sharps disposal.
Contaminated recycling bins may be tagged and left uncollected. Persistent bin placement violations or trash overflow may result in code enforcement action. Illegal dumping carries fines up to $1,000.
