Winston-Salem Sanitation Department provides weekly curbside garbage pickup and every-other-week recycling to residential customers. Containers must be at curb by 6:00 AM on the scheduled collection day and removed within 24 hours after pickup.
The Sanitation Division of the Winston-Salem City-County Utilities Department collects household garbage once per week using automated side-loader trucks and 96-gallon green roll carts. Recycling is collected every other week in 96-gallon blue roll carts. Collection schedules are organized by zone (A through F) and are published on the CityLink 311 portal and in the Winston-Salem app. Under Code of Ordinances Chapter 46 (Solid Waste), carts must be placed at the curb by 6:00 AM on the collection day, with handles facing the house and at least 3 feet of clearance from mailboxes, cars, and other carts. Carts must be removed from the curb line within 24 hours of collection. Holiday-week service typically shifts by one day. Yard waste is collected on a separate weekly schedule during the growing season (March through December) and biweekly in winter.
Leaving carts at the curb longer than 24 hours past pickup is a City Code Chapter 46 violation subject to a $50 civil penalty, escalating for repeat offenses. Non-approved containers may be refused service.
