Bayonne, NJ Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Bayonne City Code § 26-1.3 establishes a mandatory program requiring source separation of leaves for composting, newspapers, glass food and beverage containers and aluminum beverage cans from the solid waste generated by every dwelling unit in the City, plus corrugated cardboard and high-grade paper separated from the waste stream of commercial and industrial establishments and public or private institutions. Each material carries its own handling rule: leaves may be composted on-site or set out at designated pickup points; newspapers must be compacted and tied in bundles no more than 12 inches thick; glass and aluminum containers go in receptacles no larger than 10 gallons with no deliberately broken glass; and cardboard is collapsed and bundled to no more than two feet in any dimension and 40 pounds.

Section 26-1.4 lets the City collect recyclables with municipal crews or contract the work out, and § 26-1.5 makes it a separate violation for anyone not authorized by the City to pick up recyclables already set out at a designated collection point, since that material becomes City property once placed there. Owners who run their own private recycling program outside the municipal one must file quarterly tonnage verifications with the Recycling Coordinator within 20 days of each quarter's end under § 26-1.8, on penalty of the Coordinator terminating the program's approval.
