Bellevue has mandatory recycling and food waste diversion under BCC 8.04. All residents get curbside recycling; food scraps must go in yard waste.
Bellevue City Code 8.04 established mandatory residential recycling in 2007, and the mandatory food waste program took effect in 2015 for single-family homes (multifamily compliance ongoing). All single-family residents automatically receive a blue recycling cart serviced every other week by Republic Services. Accepted curbside recyclables include: paper (no shredded), cardboard (flattened), glass bottles and jars (rinsed), aluminum and tin cans, plastic containers #1, #2, and #5 (wide mouth, no plastic bags). Not accepted curbside: plastic bags (take to grocery store drop-off), styrofoam, plastic film, textiles, batteries, small appliances, scrap metal, or hazardous materials. Food scraps (fruits, vegetables, meat, bones, dairy), food-soiled paper, yard waste (grass, leaves, branches under 4 inches diameter), and pet-free compostable items go in the green yard waste cart. Contamination of recycling loads can result in fees; Republic Services tags non-compliant carts. Apartments and condos must provide recycling dumpsters. Report illegal dumping or missed pickups to Utilities Customer Service at 425-452-6932.
