Broward County enforces a mandatory recycling ordinance requiring residents and businesses to separate recyclables from trash, with commercial establishments required to provide recycling containers.
Broward County Code Chapter 27 mandates recycling countywide, requiring all residential properties, multifamily buildings, and commercial establishments to separate recyclable materials including paper, cardboard, glass, aluminum, plastic bottles and containers numbered 1-7, and metal cans from regular garbage. Single-family homes receive a blue recycling cart or bin from their city hauler with weekly curbside pickup. Multifamily properties with 5 or more units must provide accessible recycling containers and educational signage for tenants. Commercial generators producing significant recyclable volume must contract for recycling service. Contamination of recycling loads with non-recyclable material can result in the entire load being rejected and sent to landfill at increased cost.
