Briar CDP (part), Tarrant County, Texas Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements Rules (2026)

Unincorporated Tarrant County does not require residents to recycle. Participation is voluntary and arranged through a private hauler add-on service, typically for 5 to 15 dollars per month on top of regular trash service. Accepted materials generally include mixed paper and cardboard, plastic bottles and jugs (numbers 1, 2, and 5), aluminum and steel cans, and sometimes glass, though several regional haulers no longer accept glass due to processing costs. Some haulers collect recycling in a single-stream cart (commingled) while others use separate bins. Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 361, the Solid Waste Disposal Act, promotes waste reduction and recycling as state policy but does not mandate residential participation. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) supports voluntary recycling through grants and education. Some HOAs arrange bulk recycling as part of subdivision-wide service contracts, making participation effectively default. Contamination fees are becoming common when non-recyclable items (food waste, plastic bags, yard waste) are placed in recycling carts. Electronics and certain other materials cannot go in curbside recycling carts and instead require drop-off at the Fort Worth Environmental Collection Center or state-approved e-waste events. Businesses generating significant volumes of recyclable cardboard and other materials often arrange separate commercial recycling service for cost and sustainability reasons.
