Under the Mandatory Residential Recycling Ordinance (Secs. 14-71 to 14-75), owners, lessees and occupants of unincorporated residential units must sort designated recyclables into county-issued recycling containers and set them at the curb on the assigned pickup day. The franchised hauler must provide one curbside recycling collection per residential unit each calendar week, coordinated with regular trash pickup. Bins can go out up to 24 hours before collection and must come off the curb within 12 hours after. Owners can apply to the Office of Integrated Waste Management for an exemption. Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Coral Springs and the county's other 27 municipalities run their own recycling programs under their own codes, not this ordinance.

Violations are punished as provided by law, with each continuing day of noncompliance treated as a separate offense under Sec. 14-75; the county can also collect contaminated recycling as regular solid waste and bill accordingly.
