Moore County, NC Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Section 8-181, part of the Solid Waste Container Ordinance adopted October 5, 1989, is the county's only codified recycling directive: it states that the container sites Moore County owns and operates exist for citizens to dispose of residential waste and to drop off designated recyclable materials. The ordinance does not itself list which materials the county designates as recyclable or set a mandatory participation requirement for residents; the Moore County Solid Waste Department sets and publicizes what each site accepts. 8-182 bars oil, chemicals, tires, batteries, brush, yard waste, construction material and several other categories from any container site, recyclable or not, so those materials cannot be commingled with designated recycling. Contract haulers and privately hired carriers are barred from the recycling sites the same as from the general waste sites, and must instead route construction, demolition and other solid waste to the county landfill or transfer station. Because the ordinance frames recycling collection as a service tied to the same sites and hours as trash disposal rather than a separate curbside program, residents in the unincorporated county access recycling exclusively by hauling designated materials themselves to a county site during posted hours.
