Orland Park provides single-stream curbside recycling collection through Waste Management on the same day as trash pickup. Acceptable materials include paper, cardboard, glass, metal cans, and most plastic containers. Plastic bags, food waste, and shredded paper are not accepted in curbside recycling. Yard waste is collected separately and seasonally.
Orland Park's residential recycling program accepts a single-stream of mixed recyclables in the recycling cart provided to each household. Acceptable materials include newspaper, magazines, office paper, cardboard (broken down), paperboard (cereal boxes, etc.), glass bottles and jars (any color, rinsed), aluminum and steel cans (rinsed), and plastic bottles and containers labeled #1 PET, #2 HDPE, and #5 PP (caps on, rinsed). Materials not accepted in curbside recycling include plastic bags and film (which tangle sorting equipment - return to retail drop-offs at Jewel-Osco, Mariano's, etc.), Styrofoam, food waste, diapers, electronics, batteries, hazardous waste, hangers, and tanglers (hoses, wires, rope). Pizza boxes with grease are typically not recyclable but clean portions can be. Shredded paper is generally not accepted curbside but may be accepted at certain drop-off events. Contamination of the recycling stream (placing non-recyclable items in the cart) increases sorting costs and may result in loads being rejected and sent to landfill. Yard waste recycling is described separately under bulk disposal and pickup rules. The Illinois Solid Waste Planning and Recycling Act requires Cook County to maintain a recycling program, of which Orland Park's curbside service is part.
Persistent contamination of recycling carts (placing trash, plastic bags, or other non-recyclables) may result in non-collection of the cart and notices to the household. Contact Public Works at (708) 403-6350 for guidance on what is and isn't recyclable.
