Greenburgh, NY Trash & Recycling: Recycling Rules (2026)

Town Code § 410-5 sets the preparation standards that make a household's recycling collectible. Newspapers must be securely bundled, tied, or placed in a nondisposable container of no more than 75 pounds, with plastic or paper bags rejected outright, and only clean newsprint and inserts accepted. Glass must be rinsed clean with caps and lids removed and placed in sturdy, nondisposable containers; metal food, juice and beverage cans, aluminum pie plates and foil must likewise be rinsed and delidded, and may be commingled together in a single Town-supplied container that remains Town property (a resident who loses or damages it must reimburse the Town for replacement).

Section 410-5D through F extend the recycling program past curbside pickup: any service establishment defined under Environmental Conservation Law Article 23 must accept used oil at no charge, any dealer or distributor under ECL Article 27 Title 10 must redeem empty beverage containers of a type it sells, and any retailer under ECL Article 27 Title 17 must accept used lead-acid batteries at no charge, all under the terms the state law and its regulations set. These take-back duties were added by Local Law No. 4-1992 and sit alongside, not instead of, the curbside sorting rules.
