Port St. Lucie offers weekly single-stream curbside recycling. Accepted materials include paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and containers (numbers 1-5 and 7), aluminum and steel cans, and glass bottles and jars. Contamination is a growing enforcement concern.
Recycling is commingled in the 65-gallon blue cart. Acceptable items: clean paper, flattened cardboard, plastic bottles and jugs with necks narrower than the base, aluminum and steel food and beverage cans, and glass food containers. Not accepted: plastic bags (return to grocery stores), styrofoam, shredded paper, food-soiled paper, pizza boxes with grease, garden hoses, textiles, electronics, and hazardous waste. Rinse containers before placing in cart. Contaminated loads may be rejected at the Materials Recovery Facility. St. Lucie County operates a Household Hazardous Waste facility on Glades Cut-Off Road for paint, batteries, chemicals, and electronics.
Non-recyclable contamination may result in the cart being rejected (not emptied) with a tag indicating the problem. Repeat contamination can result in a warning or loss of service.
