Taylor, MI Trash & Recycling: Recycling Rules (2026)

Taylor City Code § 20-185(a)(1) spells out exactly how each recyclable stream must be prepared for the city's curbside program. Newsprint and paper, including magazines, catalogs, junk mail, office paper and phone books, cannot be bundled in plastic or trash bags. Only clear glass bottles, jars and containers are accepted, and they must be rinsed clean. Plastic jugs, bottles, household plastics and plastic grocery bags are accepted if rinsed and cleaned of contents. Metal recycling is limited to ferrous and nonferrous cans and lids, rinsed clean, with no combined products such as metal fused to plastic.

Cardboard and paperboard must be flattened and cut to fit the recycling cart, and wax-coated paperboard is refused entirely. Materials must go in the city-issued container described in Sec. 20-186(b)(3) and cannot be mixed with solid waste or yard waste under Sec. 20-185(a). Sec. 20-186(b)(3) makes the resident financially responsible for lost, stolen or destroyed containers, with replacement costs set by city council resolution, though extra containers may be leased. The director of development services and/or the director of public works enforces this article under Sec. 20-172, with authority to make implementing rules under Sec. 20-173.
