Pleasanton, CA Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

§ 9.20.010 defines 'organic waste' to include, among other things, food, green material, landscape and pruning waste, matching the state definition in 14 CCR § 18982(a)(46). § 9.20.020 then requires every residential, commercial and industrial unit to carry solid waste, recyclables and organic waste service from the collector under the city's exclusive collection contract, entered into under § 9.20.100. Pleasanton layered a second requirement on top in 2021: Chapter 9.23 adopts the Alameda County Waste Management Authority's countywide organics reduction and recycling ordinance (WMA Ord.

2021-02) by reference effective January 1, 2022, implementing the state's SB 1383 Short-Lived Climate Pollutants program, with the city amending several of that ordinance's sections, including deleting the commercial collection-frequency waiver in WMA § 6(c). § 9.20.045 separately bars anyone but the contracted collector from removing yard waste or other organic waste from a property, with limited exceptions for donations, food recovery, and a generator's own contractor removing waste it created. § 9.20.080.B allows a property owner to feed organic waste to chickens and other animals kept on the same premises instead of setting it out for collection, as long as the animals and premises stay sanitary.
