Stamford, CT Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Section 137-6 gives the city authority, not an absolute obligation, to collect bulky waste and yard waste from residential dwellings and private premises as those terms are defined in §§ 137-1 and 137-2(B); the ordinance's language is that such waste 'may be collected by the City of Stamford,' with the Director of Operations holding the authority to develop schedules and implement the actual collections. That flexibility means the yard-waste program runs on administrative schedules the Director sets, distinct from the two fixed citywide sweeps in Article III (the spring pickup under § 137-26 and fall leaf pickup under § 137-27).

The underlying definitions in § 137-1 matter for what qualifies: 'Yard waste' covers grass clippings, leaves, brush two inches or less in diameter and less than four feet in length, and other organic material generated through land-clearing activities, but it specifically excludes tree stumps. 'Bulky waste' is defined separately to mean land-clearing debris and other construction and demolition debris, along with sofas, mattresses, box springs, furniture, appliances and other items that, because of their size, have to be handled and processed separately from ordinary bagged trash.

Section 137-3 requires collectors to keep municipal solid waste, bulky waste and yard waste from being comingled in the same collection vehicle, and combined loads get turned away at the city dump site.
