Gilbert, AZ Tree Protection: Parkway Planting (2026)

D governs streets, raised medians, cul-de-sacs, turn-arounds, traffic circles and roundabouts within the street right-of-way, setting the planting standard for the parkway strip between the curb and the property line along every arterial and collector street outside the Heritage District Redevelopment Area and General Plan Gateway Character Area. Trees must go in at the time of construction, at a minimum of one tree per 30 lineal feet of street frontage, excluding driveway cuts. At least 50 percent of the required arterial street trees must be 24-inch box size or larger, and at least half must be a species designated on the Town's Streetscape Theme Tree Map for that corridor.

Shrubs are layered in at a minimum of five gallons, planted at six shrubs per tree, and shrubs and groundcovers together must cover at least 25 percent of the landscape area. Every arterial intersection needs a dedicated 50-foot-wide by 250-foot-long landscape area measured from the right-of-way lines, with no more than one driveway permitted through that intersection zone. Arterial streets require 20 feet of landscape area paralleling the street, while collector and local streets require only 10 feet. All street trees, shrubs, accent plants and groundcovers planted in the right-of-way must be drawn from the Arizona Department of Water Resources' Low Water Use/Drought Tolerant Plant List for the Phoenix Active Management Area, and stormwater retention areas in this zone cannot exceed 50 percent of the right-of-way landscape area behind the curb.
