Louisburg, KS Tree Protection: Parkway Planting (2026)

City Code §12-302(c) sets the planting standards for street trees, defined in §12-302(a)(7) as the trees, shrubs, bushes and other woody vegetation growing in the tree lawn between the property line and the street on either side of every street and avenue in Louisburg. A street tree may be planted in the tree lawn only where more than six feet separates the edge of the sidewalk from the curb, and it must sit no closer than three feet from a sidewalk, driveway or street. Three additional setbacks apply: no street tree may go within 35 feet of a street corner, measured from the nearest intersection of curb lines; none may go within 10 feet of a fire hydrant; and any tree planned within 10 feet of a point beneath an overhead utility wire needs special permission from the Community Forest Manager, the Park & Tree Board official who administers the community forestry program under §12-302(a)(2).

Where these planting rules conflict with Louisburg's zoning ordinance, §12-302(c) expressly gives the zoning ordinance precedence. The City maintains and periodically updates a recommended species list for residents planting on public or private property, available on request, to keep diversity in the total tree population under §12-302(b). Planting standards sit within the same section that authorizes the City to plant, prune, maintain and remove trees in the right-of-way under §12-302(d), and interfering with the Board, the Community Forest Manager or their agents while they carry out this planting program is separately unlawful under §12-302(h).
