Newton folds street tree planting into the design standards for its Village Center Overlay District (VCOD), the zoning overlay covering the city's village centers such as Newton Centre, Newtonville and West Newton. 6 of the Zoning Ordinance, titled Open Space and Beneficial Open Space, sets rules for how new VCOD development must provide open space, and subsection c, Street Trees, adds one specific condition: installing a street tree within the public right-of-way requires approval from the Tree Warden or their designee before the tree goes in the ground.
