Manteca does not have a breed-specific ordinance banning particular dog breeds. However, vicious animals (any breed) that demonstrate dangerous behavior are subject to enforcement under MMC Chapter 6.08. California state law (CA Food & Agric. Code Β§31683) prohibits breed-specific bans.
MMC Chapter 6.08 defines a vicious animal as one that demonstrates dangerous behavior regardless of breed; ownership of a vicious animal is prohibited within city limits. Manteca has not adopted any breed-specific legislation (BSL). California Food & Agricultural Code Β§31683 prohibits cities from enacting breed-specific ordinances. A person acting peacefully and lawfully on private property (e.g., postal workers, meter readers) performing a duty imposed by law is specifically protected by the vicious animal provision. Any animal that bites or attacks a person may be subject to quarantine and behavior evaluation.
Owning a vicious animal: citation, potential animal seizure and evaluation. Owner may be required to contain, muzzle, or relinquish the animal.
